Saya / Pianist Composer Arranger

Urban and Sophisticated, Saya is a pianist and composer who blends Jazz, R&B and Classical with a style all her own. Saya creates music that daydreams and dances, audible poetry that sends the mind traveling on a new sound adventure.

Saya grew up listening to a wide variety of music styles in her native Tokyo. She showed great musical ability at an early age, learning to play piano by ear when she was only five. While Saya was studying classical music at Toho College of Music, she began playing jazz piano and soon started to perform at clubs in Japan.

Her passion for jazz brought her to New Orleans where she received a music scholarship from Loyola University. Saya studied with pianist Mike Pellera and toured the United States and Latin America as Loyola University's representative jazz pianist. During this time she had the opportunity to perform with such artists as Benny Golson and Joe Henderson.

In 1994, Saya won the Outstanding Soloist Award at the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival. Saya also performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1993 and 1994. After graduating in 1995, Saya continued her musical studies and apprenticeship with Ellis Marsalis.

In 1997, she produced and recorded her first piano trio album "Simple Poem" with bassist David Pulphus and drummer Jason Marsalis.

From 1997 to 2000, Saya toured internationally as a pianist for Grammy award winning singer Aaron Neville, and as a keyboardist of the Neville Brothers band. As a member of the Nevilles, she performed with BB King, Dr. John, Linda Ronstadt, Wyclef Jean and many other noted musicians.

Saya composed the song "Until We Meet Again" for the Neville Brothers CD "Valence Street" (Columbia Records). She also recorded "Brahms' Lullaby" with Aaron Neville for the HBO program "Goodnight Moon".

In 2000, Saya left New Orleans and moved to San Francisco to start on her own musical career. She made her 2nd self-produced album "Destination Faraway..." which features bay area's best jazz & R&B vocalist Ledisi and many musicians from both San Francisco and New Orleans.

In 2001, Saya was signed by Pony Canyon Records (Japan) and her debut CD "Dance Your Heart" with Stan Gilbert (Bass) and Harvey Mason (Drums) was released.

In 2002 she released "UNITY", and the album won Swing Journal Magazine's coveted "Gold Disc Award".

In 2003, she released "Beautiful Day", in 2004 "Bloom", followed in 2005 by the classical jazz arranged album "Timeless." Many songs from "Timeless" were used for the Heartford Insurance company's TV commercials.

In 2005, she composed a theme song for Expo Aichi event and released and special album "Wish a World". Same year, she appeared on TV commercials for the Yagoto Housing company.

In 2006, she released her 8th album "Twilight". Saya performed and toured regularly in both Japan and the US, including performances at the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival, Meihou Jazz Festival, Nango Summer Jazz Festival, Blue Note Nagoya, Blue Note Fukuoka, and many clubs in Bay Area.

In 2007, Saya decided to take time off from touring and focus on composing and producing. Her music is currently used for many TV shows, films, commercials.

Saya's new album is scheduled to be released in 2016.
